The Alcázar, or Royal Palace, is one of the most popular sites to see
in Spain.  It is rich with culture and history.  It was originally built in the
11th century by Sevilla´s Muslim rulers.  Today, it makes up the western
part of the Alcázar.  In the 12th century, the Almohad rulers added another
palace, which is now the Patio del Crucero.  However, later much of the
Almohad palace was replaced with a Gothic one by Alfonso X.  In 1364,
Pedro I created the Mudejar Palacio de Don Pedro, Alcázar´s "crown jewel."
In the 1480s, the Catholic Monarchs, Fernando and Isabel, set up a court
here, and later rulers created Alcázar´s beautiful gardens.  This palace,
where many royalties once resided, is unique for its many centers of influence,
and today, it is still a vacation spot for the king and queen!
